Help! Need British Book Recommendations

I'm headed to the UK in November. I am so, so excited. I haven't been there since 2006 and have missed it ever since my last trip. The plan is to be in London for a week. We will make a (long) day trip to Cardiff to go to the Doctor Who Experience and also go to Leavesden for the Harry Potter studio tour, which is pretty close to London. Otherwise, I think we will be in London the entire time.

After London, we will be flying to Vienna and then Prague for a few days to visit friends and go to the Christmas Markets - something I have always wanted to do.

Here's where I could use your help:

I'd like to buy some books while I'm there by British authors. Preferably YA and preferably books that are not published in the US. You may not know which books haven't been published in the US, but would still love your recommendations.

What books feel quintessentially British to you? I'm thinking of newer titles but would love some classic recommendations too!

Also, any touristy tips would be much appreciated!

  1. I -love- British chick lit. There's something about the humor that just gets me. I'll be watching this thread in case any suggestions in that genre show up. Your trip sounds amazing--I've never been to any of those places.

  5. I would really recommend Holly Bourne's books, Soulmates and The Manifesto on How to be Interesting. They are amazing! They have been published in the US that I know of. These are so so good. I truly recommend them and she is one of my favourite authors. Check out my blog I've reviewed both of them! Hope you have fun here in the UK!!!! Check out Foyles, the bookstore, that is an amazing place to be, I could be there all day! and I live here. :D

  6. One time I called ahead to Foyles and had them order several Terry Pratchett books that were only published in the UK then picked them. Them and Sue Townsend books. Now you can order them on Amazon UK, so it's no fun anymore. OH, I found a copy of Anya Seton's "Katherine", long out print here, at Westminister Abbey gift shop! Woo-hoo!
If you go to Bath, don't forget Sally Lunn's Have PHUN!

I'm reading Peter Pan right now. I have never read it before, but felt it calling to me after finishing Code Name Verity. You can visit the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens!

  8. With Teen to YA books, I really like Jean Ure and Jacqueline Wilson. They also have a lot of children/middle grade books though so I couldn't be sure how many books they have which are Teen. Also I'm not 100 percent sure about what other authors that could be popular anywhere else but I completely have a massive thing about Roald Dahl. You should read him because everyone in the UK adores him. Also Cathy Cassidy, Neil Gaiman, Phillip Pullman, Terry Pratchett, Meg Rosoff and Louise Rennison.
