Manga Mondays #185: Death Note vol. 12 by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata

Manga Mondays Meme

I've been doing Manga Mondays every week since I started my blog almost 4 years ago. It started out as a personal feature, but I decided to turn it into a meme last year. There are quite a few people who do Manga Mondays. I don't claim by any means that I owned or created the idea of Manga Mondays - it's an obvious choice given the alliteration. I think a meme is a great way for everyone to publicize their own Manga Mondays and get a little more publicity.

The linky will be below my review.

Death Note vol. 12 by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata

Summary

Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal...or his life?

Review

It's over! I'm happy to reach the end of a well-crafted story and also happy to be able to move onto something else.

The main part of this final volume is the stand-off between Light and Near. Both Light and Near go into their planned meeting feeling very confident. Each thinks they've trapped the other. And in a way they did. Near ended up having the upper hand, but I almost attribute that as much to luck as to intelligence.

Once Light is unveiled to everyone in the room as Kira, he becomes ugly very quickly. Not just ugly in his actions - the illustrations of him become physically ugly. Desperation does not suit Light well. I wonder if he was such a bad person innately or if it was the Death Note that changed him.

I was hoping that L would make a magical resurrection at the last moment, but it was not to be. I suppose that wouldn't be realistic - although realism and notebooks of death don't really go together. Near has grown on me, though, so I was happy to see him succeed where L wasn't able to.

I really enjoyed Death Note as a series. It was a pleasant change from the flippant shojo manga I typically read. A serious, smart series with complex characters. I disliked the way the book characterized women as largely useless and background damsels. I also disliked the choice of killing off L, although I understand why it was done. All in all, not a perfect series but very well done.
