Summary

KATE WINTERS HAS WON IMMORTALITY.

BUT IF SHE WANTS A LIFE WITH HENRY IN THE UNDERWORLD, SHE'LL HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT.

Becoming immortal wasn't supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she's as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he's becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate's coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Review

Goddess Interrupted explores the world of Greek mythology more deeply than its predecessor Goddess Test. Kate is thoroughly immersed in the Underworld, but she's still a beginner and has no idea what she should be doing. It doesn't help that the gods' world is rapidly changing or perhaps imploding.

I don't quite get Kate. She is such a contradiction. She is self-conscious about her role as Queen of the Underworld, an immortal, and Henry's wife. All this is understandable given that everything is foreign to her. Yet she can also be impulsive, hard-headed, and temperamental. She is hesitant to act, but once she makes up her mind, she acts almost too quickly and without thought to the consequences. She remains extremely giving and self-sacrificing, the chief quality that stood out to me in Goddess Test. She will instinctively give her life for someone she cares about.

Henry is even more of an enigma. As is typical with second books, he was absent much of the book. Either physically or emotionally absent. By the end of the book, I understood why he was acting this way, but it was still very frustrating to see this awesome guy I loved in Goddess Test turn into a dried up fish. Part of the problem is that Henry always has his ex-wife Persephone on his mind. Luckily, Goddess Interrupted handles this. The book hints at a love triangle or a love rectangle, but really is neither. More like a love misunderstanding. Kate never sees James as a competitor for Henry, but does Henry realize that? Kate worries that Henry will never get over Persephone - does he?

The plot becomes dangerous quickly as Calliope releases a danger that could threaten them all - Cronos, the king of the Titans. Nothing like a woman scorned... Calliope is a truly intimidating villain. She would seem cardboard if not for the fact that you can tell how much she loves Henry. All the gods have to fight for their lives - by running, fighting, and bringing in reinforcements. A reinforcement named Persephone. I loved getting to know Persephone better. Her presence, in ways good and bad, allows Kate to grow into herself.

Goddess Interrupted is chock full of action scenes. I did think the plot was a little slow, but mostly that's because my favorite part of the series is Henry and Kate's relationship. I'm not as interested in the mythology/plot aspect, which this book is heavy on. I think the next book in the series will have a better mix of Henry/Kate and plot. That said, I did enjoy getting to know each of the main gods more and seeing how their personalities were in line with their mythological versions.

If you enjoy mythology, you should definitely pick up the Goddess Test series. Goddess Interrupted is a solid second book in the series and I look forward to seeing where the next book takes us.

  1. I wasn't the biggest fan of the first book! I mainly had problems with Henry, this changed with this one and I ended up liking it much better than the first. I heard many people complaining about Kate in this book, but I understood her! She wanted to be loved by Henry but on his terms, she didn't want a forced love...
Glad you liked it though - I truly have a soft spot for this series!

  4. I was actually really mad at Henry at the end of this book. I understand that he has some serious heartbreak - but I felt to some degree he was cruel - but then he is the God of the Underworld.

  6. Kate just bothers me. First off, she marries Henry then goes on vacation with another guy. Then she comes back and whines about Henry and how he's still hung up on Persephone but she does nothing to get to know him. *sigh* It wasn't a bad story, but I think I'm done with this series.

  7. I could not handle all of Kate's whining in this book. There was a misunderstanding only because she wouldn't do anything to FIX their issues. Like sit on him and MAKE him talk. Argh. I was so frustrated, especially since I liked book one.

I really don't know if I should read the last one. I may start it and if she whines about Henry, it's over.

  8. I agree. The only favourite part of mine with this sequel was the Henry/Kate relationship but still . . . this book was a real disappoint for me. Wasn't as awesome as the first book though I'm still eager for the third book. Anyway nice review!

  9. I've loved all the books in this series so far and I love how we're getting to know Henry more and more as it goes on. Loved Goddess Legacy and getting to know the back story about why the Gods are how they are, learning about their pasts and whatnot. I agree that sometimes the plot moved slowly, but I was still interested enough to really like it!

    Great review!

  11. I see what you are saying, and I do agree. If you read the Goddess Legacy, it helps you to understand Henry a little better. I think your summary of Kate is right on. You can see my review of this book here.

  12. I liked the premise of this series, but...Henry is too flat for me. I didn't get enough from him. I might read the third one, but I really don't see myself seeking it out :(

  15. I wasn't a big fan of Henry in this book either, he became someone I just really disliked actually LOL! But in the end I loved it and I'm glad it ended the way it did. Now I only need to find out what's going to happen next!!

  16. I just finished the first one and now I can't wait to read this one! I wasn't that big of a fan on Henry in the first book, so hopefully I'll like him more in this one. And I'm excited for the story to go more in depth into the world of greek mythology!

    Thanks for the great review!

  17. The first book was just meh for me so I can't decide whether to continue or not. SOmetimes things pick up once the series is established but from your review the things that annoyed me in bk1 are still relevant here. I might skip for now.
Maybe I'll wait until the series is complete.
