Manga Mondays #124: Skip Beat vol. 25 by Yoshiki Nakamura

Manga Mondays Meme!

I've been doing Manga Mondays every week since I started my blog 2 years ago. It's always been a personal feature, but now I'm going to try turning it into a meme. There are quite a few people who do Manga Mondays. I don't claim by any means that I owned or created the idea of Manga Mondays - it's an obvious choice given the alliteration. I think a meme would be a good way for everyone to publicize their own Manga Mondays and get a little more publicity.

The linky will be below my review.

Skip Beat! vol. 25 by Yoshiki Nakamura

Review

*Warning: Potential spoilers. My manga reviews tend to be more of a summary than a review. I find it hard to review manga in the same way I do regular books.
It's funny how you can intellectually know that a story is silly, but get sucked into the moment and worry with all your heart, mind, and soul about the plight of these characters in their outrageous escapades. Skip Beat is ridiculous in most ways, but the strong human emotion does me in every time.

In this book, I actually had to put the volume down for a few days because I was so shocked. Sho came to give Kyoko a huge bouquet of flowers and then kissed her. Note that he kissed her - she definitely didn't enjoy it. What was really shocking was that Ren saw it. Oh no! Fortunately, it was clear to Ren that the kiss wasn't mutual and Kyoko made sure everyone knew that by flipping out as soon as Sho got his lips away from her.

(Of course, Sho didn't kiss Kyoko because he cared for her. He just wants to ensure that Sho stays #1 in Kyoko's mind. She's his prey as much as Sho is her prey. They are kind of made for each other)

Poor Kyoko. This was her first kiss. She was devastated that her first kiss wasn't something special. This seems pretty silly to most of us who view a first kiss as special but not necessarily change the world special as Kyoko does. But I can see her point. Ren - sweet Ren - is there to comfort Kyoko by telling her that a kiss doesn't count unless it's mutual. He has a great style. Funny and slightly mocking that somehow feels comforting rather than patronizing - it works with Kyoko's personality.

The volume closes with a cute scene where Moko gives Hio her Valentine's chocolates. She's the only one who takes him seriously as a boy and as an actor. Both characters have tough edges but genuine hearts. They understand each other.

  1. Oh I know! It's funny how easily you make a connection with the manga characters. Nana can be way over the top with its drama and hook-ups, but underneath all that fluff there is a keen sense of reality- the constant search of happiness, identity, family. It's why I have a love/hate relationship of why the characters aren't happy.

  2. Awww poor Kyoko, having her first kiss experience tainted by an a-hole. At least Ren saw it for what it was and didn't make her feel even worse about it. I kind of want to hug Ren for that:)

Hope you got your computer up and working!
