Advice Needed! New Feature Idea

I started reading Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs biography on Friday. I have not been able to put the book down! This led me to think of an idea for an occasional blog feature:

Read Outside The Box

Recommendations for Standard-Setting Non-YA Books

My blog is a YA fiction blog. I rarely review books outside of that genre and have no plans to change my niche of choice. However, many YA readers enjoy reading a variety of books.

I thought it would be fun to do a monthly post recommending different books. One month may be Biographies, another month Mysteries, etc. If you don't normally read biographies and want to venture into that genre, these lists will help you identify the best of the best.

Part of the feature will be incorporating ideas from readers. There are plenty of genres that I have not read very much of, so it would be crucial to get input from knowledgeable readers to put together a good list.

What do you think about this idea? What genres would you like to see featured?

  1. That's a fantastic idea! A kind of best of the best list all in one place. It's also a good way of spot lighting books that aren't really on anyone's radar.
    I'll have to ponder ideas....

  2. I think it would be good for everyone to get out of their 'zone,' and see what else is out there. Would it be like a meme where you picked a genre every week/month/whatever and then we all read one of those and linked? Or would we all read something outside our usual? Or are you just doing it and we are recommending books?

    1. My plan was to just to it as a feature on my blog, but I'd be open to a meme too. I'm not sure yet. I'd probably start it as a feature and maybe change it later if people wanted to add their own.

  4. This is a good idea Allison. I think it's important to be able to incorporate all your literary interests in your blog. This is something I have come to realize.

  6. Ooh, sounds interesting! I've diversified lately because I was getting a bit stale just reading/reviewing YA. Always good to add in some other genres. And I really want to read the Steve Jobs bio. He's fascinating.

  7. Oooh, this is a FANTASTIC idea, and even if you're not planning on talking about other genres, it'd give you--and us--a platform to discuss the other books we love, but can't often talk about? GREAT idea! xx

  8. Great idea and I love talking about something other than YA books. So go for it. I wouldn't mind talking classics

  9. I would love to see this feature - my blog is a mish mash of genres, primarily YA. But I am always looking for new books to read, and I would love this sort of feature!

(And I actually just read a review on the Job's book and keep thinking I need to pick up my copy - maybe this is a sign?)

  13. Alison, that sounds like a GREAT idea. Maybe by doing it you'll rec a book that someone else jumps on and reads, or find some new reads for yourself! I would love to see some urban fantasy or paranormal romance featured, and I hope you decide to do this!

  14. Great feature idea! I think it could be something really informative and help broaden reader's shelves.

I think a way to keep it a feature (as opposed to a meme) and still keep your followers involved is to do it monthly. Set a theme outside of your norm that you might try and tackle a book in that genre for the month, and announce it to your readers, who can email you books that they have read and loved that fit that category. Then your feature post once a month could feature your reads plus recommendations from your readers, too! A Win Win! =D

  16. I visit a lot of eclectic reader blogs because I like variety, and I like to think I read from a lot of genres, but the truth is that I don't, I mainly stick to romances, PNR, UF, and YA. So it will be interesting to see what shows up on this feature. Thanks for doing this Alison. Even if it's a genre I don't read, I still like to be in the know.

  17. That sounds like fun! I'm a huge fan of memoirs, and I also like mysteries, urban fantasy, and travelogues. I pretty much will read anything that sounds interesting to me. Have you listened to the podcast "Books on the Nightstand?" They have some good books featured regularly.

  18. I really like this idea, Alison! Before I started my blog last year, I really didn't read much YA, and hadn't in like 7 years. I read middle school books in 3rd grade and high school books by 6th grade, so I had been reading adult for a really long time. My first blog (which was a personal blog) was started in August of '11 and when I did talk about books, they were (at first) all adult books (mystery, romance, historical fiction, contemporary) and one day I found The Story Siren and everything changed. :) For the past 5 months, it's only been YA for me and for the most part it probably will be for a looong time, but I recently picked up an Adult book and I suddenly missed them again. So, I think your idea is a really great one! Yesterday, I finished my second Adult romance book in the past week (by the lovely S.C. Stephens) and I have to say, even though I don't think I'll ever love two books this much ever again, I'm kinda glad I don't have to review them. But, I would really enjoy a monthly feature on books that are out of the YA genre! I'm such a huge fan of historical fiction (King Henry VIII-based are my favorite) and I love the occasional mystery/thriller (Michael Prescott's book are the best). Of course, I'm now a huge fan of S.C. Stephen's "Thoughtless" series (which are Adult romance), if you haven't checked them out then you should!, although I would only recommend them to the 18 or 20 year age range and above. I'm also a big classics fan! Wuthering Heights is my all time favorite book. So, yeah, I really like your thought direction here. I hope you go through with this idea! BTW, I bought my dad the Steve Jobs book for Christmas and he loved it, so I'm really glad your enjoying it this much!

  20. I love love love this idea. I try to pick different kinds of books, but I know I get stuck in YA and romance sometimes. I do love good biographies though and I'm going to start Steve Jobs on audio soon. I've been loaning it out to friends until I get ready for the long haul. I think tomorrow is the day!

Again, great idea. Though I love YA, there are some really great books out there in other genres and blogging is the only reason I know that.

  21. Great idea and super useful. I often feel like I get caged in a box, always reading the same types of things over and over again. It's because I like them, don't get me wrong, but it couldn't hurt to read something much different every once in a while. Probably be good for me, I think. I would be interested in hearing about any adult books you recommend... which is obviously a very broad topic, but it can be broken up into subgenres.

  23. I think this is a great idea! Just the other day, I was at a bookstore with my mom, and and we were talking about mystery novels. I told her I'd never read a mystery novel, and I wanted to try one out. But, I wouldn't even know what book to try out. So, I'd love to see a mystery novel or mystery series feature one month!
