Manga Mondays (92): What Is Your Favorite Manga Series

New Manga Mondays Meme!

I've been doing Manga Mondays every week since I started my blog 18 months ago. It's always been a personal feature, but now I'm going to try turning it into a meme. There are quite a few people who do Manga Mondays. I don't claim by any means that I owned or created the idea of Manga Mondays - it's an obvious choice given the alliteration. I think a meme would be a good way for everyone to publicize their own Manga Mondays and get a little more publicity.

The linky will be below my post.

No manga review today. I've been getting behind lately. I used to be so good about reading lots of manga and reviewing ahead of schedule. I will try to get back into the habit soon.

In the mean time, here's a question:

What is your favorite manga series?

I think that Sand Chronicles is probably my favorite. It is such a heartbreaking, beautiful love story. I love how real it felt - even though there were some unrealistic scenarios. It didn't feel as silly as a lot of manga. I also loved how it took place over almost 20 years, starting from when the characters were 12 until they were about 30.

I'll always have a special place in my heart for my first manga series: Fruits Basket. I became very attached to the characters and to the complexity of the mythology, especially in the last few volumes.

Another great series is Emma, which is set in Victorian England. It's about a maid who falls in love with a wealthy Englishman. It's written and drawn by a Japanese mangaka who did extensive research about Victorian-era England.

  1. Thanks for these recs! I really don't know much about manga, but I'm curious to get into it. These seem like they would be good to start with.

  2. I'm a very indecisive person, it's beyond difficult for me to pick one 'favourite' or even just a few.
I usually say Koukou Debut (High School Debute) and Lovely Complex, but there's a few others that come to mind. Here's a list of come that come to mind though.
A Kiss to the Prince, Black Bird, I.N.V.U. Mixed Vegetables, Ouran High School Host, Perfect Girl Evolution, Ranma 1/2, Show me the Money.

    I mostly read romance. XD

Anyone interested in similar mangas, I suggest checking out Shojo Beat. It's like a girl version of Shonen Jump, the magazine it's self isn't in print anymore, but the title "Shojo Beat" still prints mangas, as well as their website is still up.

They have lots of free samples of their titles online.

I pretty much have every manga on that list. ._.

  3. If i had to pick just one that would be Bleach :p Mainstream i know but for some reason i'm in love with it.
But there are others that have special place in my heart too like, Fairy Tail which always brings a smile on my face, Kimi ni Todoke which is just extremely sweet and High School Debut which was the first manga i've ever read :P

I will also be checking out the Sand Chronicles ^^

  6. It's hard to pick just one favourite, so I'll pick 2, but even that's difficult as well. Two of my most favourite manga series so far are: Fullmetal Alchemist and Inuyasha, I just love those mangas and animes so much! Although I love the Fullmetal Alchemist series more.
I would've picked Kodocha, but I like the anime better than the manga so far (I still need to read the last few volumes).

  7. Favourite?! I have no idea I love so much but which ones are my favourite? Hmm -thinks- ok if we're just speaking manga and not their anime counterparts I'd say Alice 19th by Yuu Watase was probably my first favourite manga ever. It was also the first series that I ever finished. B.O.D.Y by Ao Mimori is quite possibly my current favourite and a bitter-sweet favourite since it seems Viz has stopped publishing it without any kind of notice. It only had 4 volumes left! Pandora Hearts might possibly be my favourite shounen, it's just so brilliantly complicated and the twists I love the twists. Another bitter-sweet fav is Shinobi Life which was published by TokyoPop and stopped being released after the publishers shut down last year.

  8. I loved Emma, but I thought the last two volumes of that series was pretty week. Glad we got to see a wedding! I'll have to see if I can find the anime.

  9. Oooo I like the sound of Emma! I'm on a huge historical kick at the moment. I spent the whole weekend reading entirely too many historical romances, and I loved every second of it, so it seems this manga would be right up my current alley:)

  10. I loved Fruits Basket, too. I've only watched the anime of Emma, it's not one of my favorites, but I liked it.
Hmmm...Sand Chronicles sounds good, I'll check it out.
It's hard to pick just one, but I think my favorite shoujo manga is Hana Kimi. :)

  11. I saw the picture of The Sand Chronicles on my blogger dashboard and just had to stop by! I completely agree that is an amazing manga series definitely among my favourites!!! Did you watch the movie or the drama version of it too??

  12. My favorite manga is Bleach and it was also my first one. I usually prefer shonen manga over shojo, but I like shojo manga, too.

I've watched some of the Emma anime, but it didn't hold my interest enough, which is weird since I love Victorian stories. I plan on watching the Kimi ni Todoke anime soon, since I'm cheating and not reading the manga first.

  13. Right now I'm really into Black Butler, enough that I think it could be classified as a favorite. I did so love Fruits Basket though. It was the first manga I read all the way through. It got so awesome toward the end. Sand Chronicles is definitely up there too. I think I appreciate it a lot because I kind of discovered it for myself instead of going on a recommendation.
