Crazy For Books' Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop

Parajunkee's Follow My Book Blog Friday.

I'm Alison. I've been blogging for a year. I review mainly YA with a few MG books and a weekly manga feature.

I have a new FACEBOOK page. Check it out!

On the blog this week:

GIVEAWAY:

Win a signed copy of The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot and read about her Minnesota book signing.

Reviews:

Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok
Lost Voices by Sarah Porter

Manga Mondays

Sand Chronicles vol. 1 by Hinaki Asihara

Questions of the Week:

Blog Hop: How/Where do you get your books? Do you buy them or go to the library? Is there a certain website you use like paperbackswap?

I get the vast majority of my books from the library. I check my library website (actually two different libraries' websites) daily and have dozens of books and CDs on hold. I check the sites so often that I have two 15 digit identification codes memorized :-)

I get a few books from bookstores - a mixture of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and independent bookstores.

I get a few review books, although not many. Some come from authors or publishers, but most come from NetGalley or Galley Grab. I've also been lucky enough to win some great books in giveaways recently.

Follow Friday: What do I do when I are not reading?

You mean there's life other than reading or blogging?

On rare occasions I do tear myself away from a book or the computer. I love running. I run for about an hour every day - between 6 and 8 miles. On days I don't run, I love doing yoga.

I'm also really into cooking. I spend hours looking at cookbooks and recipe sites. A large part of my daydreaming concerns what I want to make for dinner. Tonight, for example, I made Mexican pizzas with black beans and pineapple. Plus a big salad with homemade strawberry basil pesto for dressing.

My reading and blogging habit have largely eclipsed my other hobbies, but I don't mind. I do enjoy making jewelry, particularly ones that look like this (Well, not quite like that. Chan Luu is much more talented and expensive than my bracelets):

  2. Stopping by on the hop! I love handmade jewelry, it's so unique and honestly, just my style. I can never find anything in stores that I like...

  7. Thanks for stopping by. Jewelry making! Very nice. :) As you asked what classes I will take, I will oblige. I will be taking an English methods course, level 1 intermediate French, parliamentary procedure (aka speech), and a film topics class. I hope you have a great weekend. :)

  8. I also try to run and do other types of exercise but sometimes a good story just gets in the way of my workout.

And in terms of cooking...I’ve been meaning to take a public patisserie course just because I LOOOOOVVEE making desserts. My lemon slices are to die for. Sometimes there’s not enough lemon, or coconut, or sweetness, or bitterness. I put heaps of lemon. And heaps of coconut LOL.

  10. Another commenter all ready said it, but you should definitely sell that jewelry! Or include it in giveaways. I love handmade jewelry; I love things with that personal touch, you know a lot of hard work, and love went into it.

  11. Aha! So you are one of those fit people who annoys me by looking so good while running when after half a mile I look like I’m about to pass out!

  12. Wow you are a machine! I love a good run & a yoga session!

My thesis isn't stats focused, but my masters program is psychology-research concentration...and I usually tutor stats & research design for psych majors at my university. The thesis is going to be social psych based targeting helping low-income parents of a school that just got destroyed by a natural disaster. It's pretty unique, I think & it'll help for when I go on for my PhD in Social or Quantitative Psych.

You must definitely be super smart to have majored in economics/econometrics!! Nerds unite. :-D

Thanks for hopping by! Hope you don't mind the life story! haha.

I also like running, but I've not long started and run probably a couple of miles several times a week - definitely a beginner compared to you :)

I'm an old follower just stopping past :)

  29. I like to cook too. I completely lose myself when I'm looking in a cookbook. I'm not very good at following the recipes though...I always have to change at least one thing to make it different.

  44. Hi Alison, thanks for the visit.
Well, I am completing one course, but at the end of it I get two qualifications: a Diploma in Editing (Nationally Accredited and Recognised) and a Higher Diploma in Publishing.
The freelance editing I mentioned is that I am currently an editor at Silver Publishing. If they have a potential manuscript for me, they email me with the details. It is essentially copy-editing for the most part, with structural editing if necessary.
    Have a great weekend.

In answer to your question, my friend has a huge library of thousands of books in her basement. She started out with about a hundred of her own and then over the years people from the area donated their English books to her (I live in a non-English speaking country so the official library has very few and mostly classics). So the library is private rather than public.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hey, jinx! ;)

  77. Seems like we have a lot in common. LOL I'm new to running. I'm working on being able to finish a 5k without stopping. I want to run the Disney 10k in February, so I've got a lot of work to do!

I have waaaaay too many cookbooks. My newest favorite is Sandra Lee. Her stuff is so simple and easy. My kids like it too, which is a huge plus.

Oh, and to answer your question, the cartoon jewelry is stuff like She-ra, My Little Pony, Hello Kitty, and Strawberry Shortcake necklace pendants. It's hard to find good quality 80s prints. I like to sew and paint too, so I make bags and stuff. I'm all into those market totes right now. I even found Twilight fabric! (for a student of course). I'm working on locating HP fabric. 99. Heya. :) Hope you had a good weekend. Sorry it took me a bit to stop by. My weekends get a bit hectic at times. haha.
I used to run a lot. Up to 7 miles a day at the local track, and then come home and do an hour of yoga. But I haven't done it in some time now. Mostly because summer gets horrid in Texas. And my joints are getting real bad due to early onset arthritis. So, I just do yoga the best I can. Where I can stay in air conditioning too. Haha. :P

I also love crafts. Mostly making my own bookmarks and journals, and artwork, etc. I haven't tried making jewelry yet, though. Looks fun. :)

Anyways, I'm getting all chatty. :P I hope you have a great week ahead!

  101. I wish I loved running or any kind of exercise then I could actually be healthy but sadly I don't.

That salad sounded delicious by the way. I'm drooling a little over here. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  102. I wish I could cook, liked running, or knew how to make jewelry, lol. And I'm the same, I get a few books for review straight from authors/publishers, but mostly I use NetGalley and Galley Grab.

  103. Hey! Hopping back a bit late, but wanted to thank you for stopping by.

To answer your question, my dog’s 35cm high and weighs 6,7kg! Very tiny and he just turned 4 years. ;)

Hope you had a great weekend!

  104. Hi Alison! Belated follow through! I must commend you on the running! I can't even peel myself off the coach long enough to eat after I have finished work! Try to visit the gym often though! Sonette @ Bookworm Blog

  105. Hi there,

Thanks for hopping by my blog this week! I wouldn't have minded having no electricity if it were spring, but we're in the middle of a heat wave right now in Illinois and it is *hot*. Re: Re-rooting- I don't sell the dolls I work on. I don't think I'm good enough to do that yet. Maybe one day... It is quite fun, though!

New follower on your FB page! Very cool!
Have you tried food.com or allrecipes.com? I have fun getting lost on those sites, trying to find something new to make for dinner! Though, I tend to completely tweak the recipe to make it my way!

Envious that you are reading the new Perkins book...Loved 'Anna and the French Kiss'!
