I have a new FACEBOOK page. Check it out!
On the blog this week:
Win a signed copy of The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot and read about her Minnesota book signing.
Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok
Lost Voices by Sarah Porter
Sand Chronicles vol. 1 by Hinaki Asihara
Questions of the Week:
Blog Hop: How/Where do you get your books? Do you buy them or go to the library? Is there a certain website you use like paperbackswap?
I get the vast majority of my books from the library. I check my library website (actually two different libraries' websites) daily and have dozens of books and CDs on hold. I check the sites so often that I have two 15 digit identification codes memorized :-)
I get a few books from bookstores - a mixture of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and independent bookstores.
I get a few review books, although not many. Some come from authors or publishers, but most come from NetGalley or Galley Grab. I've also been lucky enough to win some great books in giveaways recently.
Follow Friday: What do I do when I are not reading?
You mean there's life other than reading or blogging?
On rare occasions I do tear myself away from a book or the computer. I love running. I run for about an hour every day - between 6 and 8 miles. On days I don't run, I love doing yoga.
I'm also really into cooking. I spend hours looking at cookbooks and recipe sites. A large part of my daydreaming concerns what I want to make for dinner. Tonight, for example, I made Mexican pizzas with black beans and pineapple. Plus a big salad with homemade strawberry basil pesto for dressing.
My reading and blogging habit have largely eclipsed my other hobbies, but I don't mind. I do enjoy making jewelry, particularly ones that look like this (Well, not quite like that. Chan Luu is much more talented and expensive than my bracelets):
U make jewlery? Do u sell them? U should give them awayReplyDelete
Stopping by on the hop! I love handmade jewelry, it's so unique and honestly, just my style. I can never find anything in stores that I like...ReplyDelete
I want to get into yoga. Sigh.
Jennifer @ The Bawdy Book Blog
Also, gonna go check out your Lost Voices review..I'm curious what you thought.ReplyDelete
Who has time for other hobbies beyond reading and blogging? All I do is work, family, read, blog and not necessarily in that order! Nice.ReplyDelete
Here's mine: http://www.stuckinbooks.com/2011/07/follow-friday-7-15-11.html
Thanks for stopping by! Old follower here.ReplyDelete
I admire you for being a runner. I'm terrible at sticking with it, but I really want to start again.
Holjo @ Pedantic Phooka
I used to make jewelery and keychains when I was younger. Unfortunately it was a hobby I grew out of eventually. I'm sure you could probably make some money form your pieces. You should market them.ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by. Jewelry making! Very nice. :) As you asked what classes I will take, I will oblige. I will be taking an English methods course, level 1 intermediate French, parliamentary procedure (aka speech), and a film topics class. I hope you have a great weekend. :)ReplyDelete
I also try to run and do other types of exercise but sometimes a good story just gets in the way of my workout.ReplyDelete
Have a great weekend!
Thanks for hopping by!ReplyDelete
And in terms of cooking...I’ve been meaning to take a public patisserie course just because I LOOOOOVVEE making desserts. My lemon slices are to die for. Sometimes there’s not enough lemon, or coconut, or sweetness, or bitterness. I put heaps of lemon. And heaps of coconut LOL.
Another commenter all ready said it, but you should definitely sell that jewelry! Or include it in giveaways. I love handmade jewelry; I love things with that personal touch, you know a lot of hard work, and love went into it.ReplyDelete
Aha! So you are one of those fit people who annoys me by looking so good while running when after half a mile I look like I’m about to pass out!ReplyDelete
Wow you are a machine! I love a good run & a yoga session!ReplyDelete
My thesis isn't stats focused, but my masters program is psychology-research concentration...and I usually tutor stats & research design for psych majors at my university. The thesis is going to be social psych based targeting helping low-income parents of a school that just got destroyed by a natural disaster. It's pretty unique, I think & it'll help for when I go on for my PhD in Social or Quantitative Psych.
You must definitely be super smart to have majored in economics/econometrics!! Nerds unite. :-D
Thanks for hopping by! Hope you don't mind the life story! haha.
I always admire people who cook as I can hardly boil water. (no June Cleaver here). Your dinner sounds amazing, I hope you have just as good a weekend!ReplyDelete
Hey Alison. Thanks for stopping by my blog.ReplyDelete
I used to make jewelry too but stopped a few years ago, now I want to go back to the habit though!
Mexican pizzas sound absolutely delicious!
Lovely blog, new follower (:
Thanks for stopping by! I really love the design of your blog. I also love looking at recipes online-your pizzas sound really yummy.ReplyDelete
I love finding out a bit more about the blogger behind the blog! I love to cook as well and I have made some jewellery, mostly round about Christmas time. I also like running, but I've not long started and run probably a couple of miles several times a week - definitely a beginner compared to you :)ReplyDelete
I'm an old follower just stopping past :)
Have a great weekend.
I envy that you can cook. The most I can do is cook instant noodles and fry an egg...ReplyDelete
Hi & Happy Friday!ReplyDelete
My FF, http://obsessionwithbooks.blogspot.com
Have a nice weekend :)
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Wow, you do a lot. I think it's so cool that you make your own jewelry. I wish I was creative enough to do my own too.ReplyDelete
@Ramblings From This Chick
stopping by from the blog hop.
Have a wonderfull weekend
Laced Little Muffin's Reading Corner
Just hopping by and following through.
I've liked your Facebook Page (hope you decide to return the favour)
I hate running, and even if I go for a walk I read at the same time LOL
hopping by and if by chance to are hopping, hop by. I also love to cook, especially international cooking. i have over 200 recipe books. well 150. i decided to go through them and pick out only the ones i wanted and i am down to about 150. i am placing them in plastic protective covers and in a album book instead of all those books. its enough with the novels. lolReplyDelete
It's been a lot of fun this week seeing what everyone does in there non-bookish time. Thanks for stopping by.ReplyDelete
I wish I could get into running. It would definitely help with the weight loss. I also love to look at cook books and do some cooking, but I don't do it very often. I need to start doing it more though! Your dinner sounds delicious!ReplyDelete
life does get in the way of fun, but isn't it great to take the "me" time with a good book or fun blog?ReplyDelete
thanks for stopping by!
Running :-O !! Wow I don't even think I can jog anymore. I am so computer chair shaped anymore. lolReplyDelete
I wish I could cook but my brother, who is a chef, inherited all of those genes.ReplyDelete
Here's my HOP
Hey Allison! Happy Friday! Old Follower! Just stopping by the blog hop! Have a great weekend!ReplyDelete
Happy Friday Alison! I really need to check out my local library and see what they have. I surprised myself when I got my Kindle bill for the month - whoa. It's just so easy to push that button;) Hope you have a great weekend!ReplyDelete
I like to cook too. I completely lose myself when I'm looking in a cookbook. I'm not very good at following the recipes though...I always have to change at least one thing to make it different.ReplyDelete
I also love to use my local library for books. It's nice that they even know me when I walk in now. Have a great weekend!ReplyDelete
Love that bracelet! I aspire to be that good one day. I tried making a bracelet last night and it was too big so it became a decorative cat collar.ReplyDelete
New follower, happy Friday! And thanks for stopping by earlier!
I really, really want to be a runner! When I am able to, it's a great way to relieve stress. :) I love that our library has a website where I can surf the shelves from home! LOLReplyDelete
My sister makes jewelry. I'm always amazed at the stuff she can do. I think that's a great talent to have. I understand about other things eclipsing those types of hobbies, though. I love to crochet and knit, but I don't do it nearly as often as I used to.ReplyDelete
Haha, indeed, is there life outside blogging?ReplyDelete
Wow, that bracelet is awesome :) Making jewelry is awesome, did you take a course or something?
Btw, I love your blog theme. So peaceful :)
Livia @ Butterfly-o-Meter books
I wish I could run that long and that many miles. I think it is cool that you make jewelry.ReplyDelete
My blog checklist is a checklist of all the things that I need to do in regards to the blog. I feel really bad when I forget to reply to a review request or don't reply to comments on my blog. I whine about it for days and wonder if people hate me. To avoid this problem, I created a checklist to help me remember to do the things that make me feel bad if I forget.
Haha...sorry for the long comment.
Thanks so much for dropping by! :)ReplyDelete
I used to run all the time but after I started school that kind of fell to the wayside lol. I'm hoping to get back into doing it now that I'm finishing up school. And yoga is something I've been wanting to try for a long time :)
I love cooking too! I love finding new recipes or making up my own :)
Hope you have an awesome weekend!
How do you find the time at all Alison? I walked up two flights of stairs the other day and almost passed out, so running is out of the question for me! Maybe I'll start off slow and walk a bit more. You've inspired me.ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by my blog again :) Have a great weekend.
I tried my hand at cooking at the other day ... it did not turn out well, haha! I am definitely going to have to learn how to do more than just microwave food when I move out in the future!ReplyDelete
Alison! Hi! xDReplyDelete
Sorry, I'm really excited, hahaha, I LOVE your blog and next Monday I plan to participate in your meme "Manga Monday", you see, I'm a HUGE fan os manga and anime!
Thanks for passing by my blog, and to answer your question I have lots of favorite Hindi movies but to name a few:
- Muhje Dosti Karoge.
- Dhoom 2
- Kabhie kushi kabhie gham
- Dil bole Hadippa!
- Etc etc...
And I make jewelry too! It's one fo my hobbies, hehe. Most of the things I used have been made by me :D
I love finding out what everyone else does in their non-reading time! (I didn't think that really existed before now!)ReplyDelete
Have a great weekend,
I am impressed with your library habit! I need to spend more time checking out my own local library. Thanks for visiting my blog.ReplyDelete
Wow your blog is really nice. Thank you for stopping by my blog.ReplyDelete
I make jewelry occasionally too! I used to make a lot more of it.ReplyDelete
I usually only check my libraries every week or two, because I have SO MANY books to read, so I definitely don't have my numbers memorized.
Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Alison, thanks for the visit.ReplyDelete
Well, I am completing one course, but at the end of it I get two qualifications: a Diploma in Editing (Nationally Accredited and Recognised) and a Higher Diploma in Publishing.
The freelance editing I mentioned is that I am currently an editor at Silver Publishing. If they have a potential manuscript for me, they email me with the details. It is essentially copy-editing for the most part, with structural editing if necessary.
Have a great weekend.
I remember seeing a DIY tutorial on the that bracelet! Loved it then, still love it now.ReplyDelete
I also like to cook and go on cooking websites. The main one I go to is foodgawker.com which features a bunch of recipes and pretty food pictures. I like to refer to it as my food porn.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!ReplyDelete
You are such a busy little bee, lol. I enjoy cooking as well, but running, hmmmm, not my particular cup of tea. I'm trying to bribe my boyfriend to buy me a trampoline so I don't have to run, lol.
Have a great weekend!
Mandy @ Embrace Your Oddities
Happy Friday Alison of many talents! Lol. You should work your jewelry into a giveaway! I envy your discipline for physical exercise... When I'm chained to my computer I'm quite inactive.ReplyDelete
I have two libraries too, and I always put stuff on hold. That way I can go in and out, read more, and not get all sorts of other stuff I don't have time for!! lolReplyDelete
Hi, new follower here!ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
I loove cooking and baking, which I actually forgot to put up in my Follow Friday post haha.
Heres my reply to your comment in case you dont stop by again - - I love hana yori dango, Love Shuffle, Liar Game, Tokyo Dogs, Tumbling, Nodame Cantible and sooo much more you should check out my profile - http://mydramalist.info/users/2413/nomadicwriter
Yum! I'll be at your house for dinner! New to FF!ReplyDelete
Hi! Hopping back! I like making bracelets along those lines. I'd love to see the ones you've made!ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by Ashley Suzanne. Thought I would say hey and that I am an old follower :]ReplyDelete
I wish I could make jewelry.ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm a new follower.
Thanks for hopping by and I'm already an old follower! :) I wish I had the patience to make jewelry!ReplyDelete
Hey Alison! Thanks for stopping by the book element! My Friday's been kind of crazy, so I'm just now getting to hop around.ReplyDelete
About REVOLUTION. OMG. I didn't think it was going to be my cup of tea and then I ended up loving it! It was such a pleasant surprise. If you haven't read it yet, I definitely recommend it. I'll have a review up soon, hopefully :)
Ohhh I love to cook too, except my cooking skills definitely need some improvement! AND I totally memorize my library pin too, it's just so much easier. ;DReplyDelete
Have a great weekend!
That bracelet is SO CUTE!! You're super talented. I wish i could run or cook, but i can't so you're officially better than me =]ReplyDelete
Just Stopping by. Happy Saturday,
Thank you so m uch for stopping by! Following you too!ReplyDelete
I have to say, I'm so jealous of what you also said and do. I can't cook for my life, I burn water, my mother's afraid I'll starve when I go off on my own! I want to do yoga as well, but I never find the time. My aunt does it though, so maybe I'll start through her!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Have a wonderful weekend.ReplyDelete
Bookgirl @ My Book Addiction
Jewelry making - ah love it, though I'm kinda hopeless. ;)ReplyDelete
Glad you liked my other blog as well, I've had it for 4+ years now. :)
From: Niina's FF
HI Alison, I really commend you on the running. I am so tired after work I can hardly read or blog a bit. I do try to go to the gym often though... hmm... when I can... Hehe! Have a great weekend! Sonette @ Bookworm BlogReplyDelete
Such a pretty bracelet!ReplyDelete
Also the mexican pizza sounded yumm!
- OopsI Read That Book!!
Thanks for stopping by my blog #BookthatThing.ReplyDelete
I'm an old follower!
You sound just like me at the library. I'm always checking the catalog for new releases. I'm always checking to see when I'll receive my materials on hold. And, yes, I have my 15 digit code memorized too.ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by the new blog and following!
Thanks for stopping by.ReplyDelete
In answer to your question, my friend has a huge library of thousands of books in her basement. She started out with about a hundred of her own and then over the years people from the area donated their English books to her (I live in a non-English speaking country so the official library has very few and mostly classics). So the library is private rather than public.
Hey, jinx! ;)ReplyDelete
I really should go to the library more. I spend a fortune on books. :D
Oooh, I love makey-doey-stuff like that! Me and my aunt make stuff for our family at christmas, and have done for ages. Last year it was bags, this year... who knows! :D
And, no, I don't make the cola-lollies. You can buy them. :)
Thanks for stopping by my blog and for all your comments! Have a great rest-of-weekend! xx
Thanks for stopping by my blog, I am returning the favor. I must check out your review for Lost Voice, I have heard some not so good words about it so I am curious as to what you think.ReplyDelete
Have a great weekend!
Heh cooking is definitely a good hobby. I can't run, i get like a few meters and i'm done. I am joining the gym though, as i really need to get fit. I'm 21 and my grandad is fitter than me.ReplyDelete
Also really pretty bracelet.
Thanks for visiting my blog earlier! That's awesome that you can make jewelry! I've only ever been able to make the simple stuff I did as a child--"friendship" bracelets and my own version of power beads. Nothing spectacular like yours!ReplyDelete
Have a GREAT weekend!
Old Follower :)
Last time I made jewelry was when I was little. Now, I just leave it to the more talented ones.ReplyDelete
Do you sell?
I've just recently discovered NetGalley. They have some good books. Most of the books I get are review copies from the publishers.ReplyDelete
Hey there, thanks for stopping by! And seriously, details with crayons?? Wow. I would have love to have seen that. Those things can be difficult to work with...Thank you for sharing!ReplyDelete
Running, how great :)ReplyDelete
You mean there's life other than reading or blogging?ReplyDelete
lol, exactly! Oh and you can come cook for me anytime cause I am terrible at it! lol ;)
Thanks for stopping by my follow friday and book blog hop as well!
How. Extraordinary. I couldn't get that much detail in with pencils most of the time. Or anything for that matter. Thank you so much, I'm going to send this to friends in the field. Absolutely fabulous!ReplyDelete
Thanks so much for following AND looking at Pickel - means a lot to me!ReplyDelete
I'm following you back, too!
I used to make jewelery when I was in college...great stress relief. I haven't done it in ages - I should get back to it. I'm not talented enough to put them up on eTsy, though...maybe one day, with practice ;)
Have a great weekend!!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Another workout person! I'm not a big runner, though sometimes I do!ReplyDelete
In response to your question about my favorite crime show...I'd have to saw NCIS. I'm not really into the super scary ones.
Have an awesome weekend!
Seems like we have a lot in common. LOL I'm new to running. I'm working on being able to finish a 5k without stopping. I want to run the Disney 10k in February, so I've got a lot of work to do!ReplyDelete
I have waaaaay too many cookbooks. My newest favorite is Sandra Lee. Her stuff is so simple and easy. My kids like it too, which is a huge plus.
Oh, and to answer your question, the cartoon jewelry is stuff like She-ra, My Little Pony, Hello Kitty, and Strawberry Shortcake necklace pendants. It's hard to find good quality 80s prints. I like to sew and paint too, so I make bags and stuff. I'm all into those market totes right now. I even found Twilight fabric! (for a student of course). I'm working on locating HP fabric. It has to be out there somewhere. =)
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Old follower here.
Thanks for stopping by, now following back! I run and do yoga too..well, at least before I had the baby that is. In answer to your question, reading time has suffered alot since the baby but I still manage to sneak in a bit of reading when I'm breast-feeding :)ReplyDelete
Have a great weekend!
Hi! Just stopping by on the Hop.ReplyDelete
I do the same thing! I love to cook and bake so sometimes (even when I'm working out) I'm thinking about food.
Have a great weekend :)
Caroline @ Bon Bons and Reveries
That's cool that you like to make jewelry. Thanks for stopping by my blog.ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by again. I miss the days I used to make great meals. And a runner too? HOW do you handle the cold or extreme heat? 'Specially the cold? I tried jogging and I'm not very good at all.ReplyDelete
Hi there, thanks for stopping by my blog!ReplyDelete
I love yoga as well! It's one of my favourite workouts. It surprised me when I started just how much difference it made for me!
I'm following you now as well :)
Haven't heard of Galley Grab, I'll have to check that out! I also really need to get signed up to check out e-books from my local library. I know it isn't that hard, it's just sitting down to do it that I keep putting off.ReplyDelete
I love cookbooks, but don't love cooking. Weird, I know!!ReplyDelete
thanks for visiting.ReplyDelete
I can't run - after 100 meters I'm exhausted, but I would love to do Yoga.
I love looking at cookbooks too - my favourite are baking books - cakes mmmmmm.
I'm always in awe of people who run. I'm a terrible runner. It's embarrassing. :) I'd love to see your jewelry sometime!ReplyDelete
I wished I loved to run :( I do love yoga, it's so relaxing!!ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by my blog! New follower!
Hey new follower thanks to the great #FF!ReplyDelete
Its so great to see you do Manga reviews as well, I love my comics and the odd Manga but there's so many out there these days is almost impossible to now where to begin!
I would love to enjoy Yoga but alas my body is clumsy and awkward at the best of times, the most I can achieve is a good stretch!
Please feel free to drop by: http://booksforone.blogspot.com/
I love being close to two libraries! (one has way more books than the other, but they both host a lot of authors, so that's fun).ReplyDelete
And, if you know when you'll be in UT I could look up if there are signings for you. If you'll be close to Salt Lake or Utah County it's more likely than a different part of the state. But it seems like there's always something going on out this way. :)
Hi! I'm visiting back from follow friday, that dinner sounded delicious! I am not much of a cook so we have plain jane dinners around here, but hubby's a great griller so that makes up for it. My bead jewelry is not nearly as compicated as the one you have pictured above, I only wish I was that good!ReplyDelete
Haha I check my library's website daily too!ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by. To answer your question about the difference between kpop and jpop, other than the language, is the style. Umm I don't know what else to say, but I think it'll help if you hear the difference yourself. Hope that makes sense :)
Geez, I wish running was something I loved to do. That would really help me drop some of this weight I get from snacking while I'm reading. lol. thanks for hopping by my blog.ReplyDelete
Wow you are a dedicated runner! It's so cold here in Sydney at the moment that I tend to hibernate a bit and not leave my house! That's when a good book comes in handy!ReplyDelete
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
New follower stopping on by...ReplyDelete
Kristin @ http://kristincanread.blogspot.com/
I'm so jealous that you can run 6 to 8 miles. I'd love to be able to that, but first I've got get my knee back into good working order. =)ReplyDelete
The Haunting of Orchid Forsythia
So awesome that you make jewellery! I've given it a try in the past, but it's never anything special. I'd love to see some of your creations on here! :DReplyDelete
Stopping by to return the favor! I love your blog! That's so cool you make jewelry. :)ReplyDelete
Your Newest Follower,
OMG we have a LOT in common! I love yoga too AND I make jewelry! I taught myself how to make leather wrapped bracelets a few months ago but only made one (and then took it apart because I'm lame).ReplyDelete
I'm a runner too, but much shorter distances. I usually go 2 miles each day. Cooking is fun. If you have any great recipes let me know.ReplyDelete
Heya. :) Hope you had a good weekend. Sorry it took me a bit to stop by. My weekends get a bit hectic at times. haha.ReplyDelete
I used to run a lot. Up to 7 miles a day at the local track, and then come home and do an hour of yoga. But I haven't done it in some time now. Mostly because summer gets horrid in Texas. And my joints are getting real bad due to early onset arthritis. So, I just do yoga the best I can. Where I can stay in air conditioning too. Haha. :P
I also love crafts. Mostly making my own bookmarks and journals, and artwork, etc. I haven't tried making jewelry yet, though. Looks fun. :)
Anyways, I'm getting all chatty. :P I hope you have a great week ahead!
Thanks for stopping by my FF! That dinner sounds delicious! I want to come to your house for supper! I think my other hobby is eating ;)ReplyDelete
I wish I loved running or any kind of exercise then I could actually be healthy but sadly I don't.ReplyDelete
That salad sounded delicious by the way. I'm drooling a little over here. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
I wish I could cook, liked running, or knew how to make jewelry, lol. And I'm the same, I get a few books for review straight from authors/publishers, but mostly I use NetGalley and Galley Grab.ReplyDelete
Jamie @ Bookerella
Hey! Hopping back a bit late, but wanted to thank you for stopping by.ReplyDelete
To answer your question, my dog’s 35cm high and weighs 6,7kg! Very tiny and he just turned 4 years. ;)
Hope you had a great weekend!
Rebecca at Kindle Fever
Hi Alison! Belated follow through! I must commend you on the running! I can't even peel myself off the coach long enough to eat after I have finished work! Try to visit the gym often though! Sonette @ Bookworm BlogReplyDelete
Thanks for hopping by my blog this week! I wouldn't have minded having no electricity if it were spring, but we're in the middle of a heat wave right now in Illinois and it is *hot*. Re: Re-rooting- I don't sell the dolls I work on. I don't think I'm good enough to do that yet. Maybe one day... It is quite fun, though!
I wished I run but I'm too lazy! I love yoga though!ReplyDelete
Hopping through, old follower.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!ReplyDelete
New follower on your FB page! Very cool!
Have you tried food.com or allrecipes.com? I have fun getting lost on those sites, trying to find something new to make for dinner! Though, I tend to completely tweak the recipe to make it my way!
Envious that you are reading the new Perkins book...Loved 'Anna and the French Kiss'!
