Hopping at the Weekly Hops!

It's time for the weekly book blogger hops again! A great opportunity to meet new bloggers and say hi to old.

Check out the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Crazy For Books.

I'm Alison. I've been blogging for five months. I review mainly YA with a few MG books and a weekly manga feature.

Books Reviewed This Week:

Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta - I loved this book. And I'm really proud of my review. Check it out!
Zan-Gah by Allan Richard Shickman
Love*Com by Aya Nakahara
Sunshine by Robin McKinley

Questions of the Week:

Blog Hop: If you find a book that looks interesting but is part of a series, do you always start with the first title? Definitely. It's confusing any other way. The only exception I can think of are the Narnia books, where there are arguable two "best" orders in which to read the series.

Follow Friday: What is your monthly book budget? Very little. I get almost all my books from the library. Since I've started blogging, I have spent more money on books that I sudden must have. But still, I don't spend more than $40-50 a month.

And also check out Parajunkee's Follow My Book Blog Friday.

  1. Happy hopping, Alison! I'm so glad I found your blog a while back...it's one of my favourites to regularly visit now :)

  2. Hi Alison! Dropping by via the hop! :) I'm an old follower!

Wow, you reviewed a lot of books this week. I only posted one, and its not even mine, its from my co-blogger. My book budget is just around $30, sometimes less if I don't have much money. I borrow books from my friends too, so I get to read other books my budget can't cover.

My Follow Friday post for this week.

  3. Hey there! I'm behind on my hopping from last week - thank you so much for hopping by my blog!

Blogging is definitely bad for the book budget! The I WANT list just keeps growing! Lol! =)

  5. Hey Alison! I'm an old follower, but thanks for stopping by. I agree that there are certain series out there that can be read in different orders. Carlos Ruiz Zafon's Shadow of the Wind and The Angels Game are like that.

  6. Hopping through and now following you! That rhymes, I know!

I, too, cannot pick up the 2nd or 3rd book in a series without having read the 1st one. It seems rather pointless to miss the introduction.

  9. Hi!! I'm so going to go read your review of Jellicoe Road, I love that book to pieces!!!

I came by through the hop, and well, I'm sort of like you, I find it a bit confusing if I don't read in order.

    Have a great weekend!

  10. I suddenly must have books all the time. If I see it I want it. Have a great weekend!

  11. Hi, Alison! Yeah, it can be confusing if we read it out of order. Unless the author says it's ok to read it in another way then I'll go for it. But I stay safe and start with the first book always. :)

    have a nice weekend!

  12. My book budget is almost invisible and very sad *sniffs* and I always try to start at the beginning! But if I can't...I still get that book !!

  13. hello again Alison :) I'm an Old Follower!

I try to get most of my books from the library.. but I always have impulse purchases when I am out. We have lots of great used bookstores around here and.. I always end up leaving with something. :) I always read series in the correct order. I read Narnia beginning with the Magician's Nephew, but I wished I hadn't lol. I read it a long, long time ago, and I got so attached to the characters in that book.. but then they just disappeared lol

  14. Hey! I'm an old follower just stopping by on the hop to wish you a great weekend!

I usually start by the first book in a series as well. Otherwise I just end up confused and having to go back anyway! But every now and then I'll skip the first book in error and find out about it later the hard way.

  19. Happy Friday Alison! Hope you have a wonderful weekend:) I should definitely go to the library more, but sometimes my car just drives itself to the bookstore and I have no idea how I ended up there. Weird.

  22. I should probably go to the library more often. I don't get a lot of money for books so it would probably help...

  23. Hey Alison, thanks for commenting on my Christmas meme! I did make that book "tree" sculpture myself, from my own book collection. It was way harder than I thought it would be (I am certainly not meant to be an architect) but I'm happy with how it turned out! :)

  28. Hi and thanks for stopping by my blog. My sister hates Dr. Seuss books,so I completely understand. I think I like them because I love to make up words.

  29. I can dive right into the middle of a book series if the series' story
    doesn't run chronologically.

That is to say, if each novel in a series is a stand-alone story (like Lee
Child's Reacher novels) then I don't feel the need to start with book one.

On the other hand, a series of books (like Richard Hatch's Battlestar
Galactica novels) can't be read out of sequence since each new book builds
upon the story of the previous entry in the series.

    Happy Book Blogger Hop Friday!
