Crazy For Books' Book Blogger Hop
Parajunkee's Follow My Book Blog Friday.
I'm Alison. I've been blogging for nine months. I review mainly YA with a few MG books and a weekly manga feature.
On the blog this week -
Reviews
Wither by Lauren DeStefano
No Going Back by Jonathan Langford
Manga Mondays
Fruits Basket vol. 19 by Natsuki Takaya
Questions of the Week:
Blog Hop: If you could physically put yourself into a book or series…which one would it be and why?
Hmmm....
1. Twilight - But only if I could be a Cullen.
2. Harry Potter - Isn't this one rather obvious?
3. Princess For Hire by Lindsey Leavitt - I just finished this one. I'd love to be a substitute Princess.
4. Betsy-Tacy by Maud Hart Lovelace - One of my all-time favorite book series. It's semi-autobiographical and set in Mankato, Minnesota (called Deep Valley in the books) between 1900 and 1910. I love reading about Betsy's high school friends hanging out at her house, eating fudge and onion sandwiches (not together) and singing to the tune of a piano. It sounds so idyllic.
Follow Friday: Inspired by the inane twitter trend of #100FACTSABOUTME, GIVE US FIVE BOOK RELATED SILLY FACTS ABOUT YOU.
1. One of my favorite things to do is read cookbooks. I got The Essential New York Times Cookbook by Amanda Hesser for Christmas. Even though I probably won't make many of the recipes, I love flipping through the pages and reading the stories about the recipes.
2. When I was a kid, I loved picture books that had an accompanying cassette tape. Since my mother got carsick, she couldn't read to me when we were on car trips. I loved listening along to my books. My favorite was The Fox and the Hound (also one of my favorite Disney movies).
3. I will use virtually anything for bookmarks. Actual bookmarks are one of the least frequent things I'll use. I often use the hold receipt from the library. Money seems to be a specialty of mine - cash, checks, receipts.
4. These days, I read mostly YA novels, but for years the majority of my reading was history and biographies. My favorite time period is the Revolutionary War and early American history. I wish I'd majored in history in college.
5. I'm an enabler. When we met, my husband hardly ever read anything other than medical textbooks. He'd loved reading as a kid, but got away from it in college and graduate school. I reignited the addiction. We don't read the same books (although I did get him hooked on White Cat and Red Glove by Holly Black), but we read together all the time.
Just hopping by! Hope you have a good Friday! My FF is at Coffee Table Press
ReplyDeleteI'm here from the hop. Hope you'll visit me at http://redhotbooks.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteHello Alison! Old follower here.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you enjoyed Wither...I've been hearing great things about it!
Hope you have a great week!

Hi alison!! just hopping by to say hi!!
ReplyDeleteHop, hop! Just call me the Easter bunny! Hi Alison!
ReplyDeleteHi! I love your site! I'm a new follower. I got my husband reading again, too. He likes biographies so I started him on the Presidents.
ReplyDeleteCome visit my blog if you get the chance: http://bookendcrossing.blogspot.com/2011/03/follow-friday-march-25th.html
Have a great weekend!
Lol! I use so many random things as bookmarks, as well! My chapstick was the only thing I had laying on my nightstand while I was reading today so I put that in my book temporarily! =P
ReplyDeleteThanks fo visiting my blog (: I never use a real bookmark either, I use random scraps I find and even my cell phone lol.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean, when I do read paper books (since I read mainly ebooks now that I have a nook) I NEVER use any of my (probably hundreds) of bookmarks, they never seem to be in reach when I need them, it's always some scrap of paper - a piece of junk mail or just something I tore off lol
ReplyDeleteApril @ My Shelf Confessions
Lol, yah bookmarks require me to be in a place where they are located... but since they are lost as soon as I finish a book >.>
ReplyDeleteWooo for enabling ^.^

That's sweet that you got your hubby back into reading! My husband hasn't read a novel the whole time we've been married. LOL!
ReplyDeleteLove your answers! I'll agree, reading with a significant other is so much fun :) I also loved picture books with cassette tapes when I was younger... I played the Winnie the Pooh one's over and over again.
ReplyDeleteTake care & happy reading,
Ms. C
http://www.coffeetalereviews.blogspot.com/
I wish I could enable my husband to read while I read but he's too hyper! ;)
ReplyDeleteHere's my 5 bookish things.
Aw, I love The Fox and the Hound, American Revolution history, and flipping through cookbooks. This is like a post of my favorite things :) Just be careful with your money bookmarks! Wouldn't want to accidentally return a book with one of those bookmarks still inside.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I really like your layout! Cherry blossoms are very seasonal. I found you through the Hop and I'm going to be adding you. Hope you check out and enjoy my blog as well. Tedious & Brief
ReplyDeleteI'm really interested in seeing how Manga Mondays go. I am slowly getting into that a bit more with the help of a friend and actually finishing up my first review for a manga for my site soon.
Hi Allison, I'm a new Follow Friday Follower. I love rthe books with cassettes too, though my favorite was The Lady and The Tramp on, cause it had the Siamese Song on it. :D
ReplyDeleteHiya, old follower here just stopping by for the hop. As for #2 I wanted to share with you that I also listened to books and sing-along music on tapes when I was a kid, but they weren't just tapes, they were on my cassette-playing robot named Casey! I was so sad when that silly thing broke, but I used to bring it to bed with me like it was a Teddy Ruxpin when really it was made of cold, hard plastic lol! There is a picture of me when I was one or two laying in bed, staring at my robot as I fell asleep haha!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, thanks for sharing and reminding me of my beloved toy robot and all the books "he" read to me! :)
-Sandra from http://sandrathenookworm.blogspot.com
Hopping by! I use a lot of different things for bookmarks, too. And I have tons of bookmarks. Interesting on how you got your husband hooked on Holly Black! What does he think of your love of Manga? Have a great weekend :)
ReplyDeleteHopping by. I think it is cute that you are an enabler :)
ReplyDeleteHopping by! I find it strange that you use money for a bookmark - I would have probably spent it before I could! XD

Hey Alison Happy Friday! Have a great weekend :)
ReplyDeleteHi Alison! I'm a new-ish follower. I also loved audio books when I was a kid - they had the best "turn the page" chimes.
ReplyDeleteHere is my hop post:
http://handsandhome.blogspot.com/2011/03/follow-friday.html
Hopping by to say hi! I actually read an equal amount of YA and adult paranormal books. I like getting into both worlds, since lately a lot of YA has really become just as good as adult ones!
ReplyDeleteHere's my Friday Hops
Have a GREAT weekend!
Old Follower
Jessica@a GREAT read
Coming through on the blog hop. Wish you a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteGreat answers. I forgot about twilight...that would be fun except I don't like cloudy weather. Have a great weekend!!
ReplyDeleteHey Alison, old follower stopping by for the Friday Follow from Crazy for Books. You've certainly made some interesting series choices, and I don't blame you for specifying that you'd want to be a Cullen in the Twilight universe ;-) Also, I, too, use anything I can find as a bookmark although I do have to say that with my e-reader automatically taking me back to the page I was on, I love that feature :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend,
Darkeva
1 & 3 are definitely something I do too! And, as you saw from my BBH post, to the horror of other booknerds out there, I'm not afraid to dog-ear for a bookmark! ;)
ReplyDeleteJust hopping by..old follower.
ReplyDeleteHaha,I used ANYTHING for a bookmark as well.
Happy Friday!
I'm an old follower but always happy to stop by your beautiful site.
ReplyDeleteI'm an enabler, too. If someone says they 'don't' read, I always try to 'give them the gift' of reading by finding a book I think that will pique their interest. I feel so sad for those that don't read!
It's such a wonderful world to escape to, to learn from and for just pure unadulterated joy!
Nice to see you again! Stop by and see me!
MyFF
I'm the same way! I currently have a cute little Vans tag I cut off my shoes as a bookmark! Thanks for stopping by! I'm an old follower!
ReplyDeleteAimee @ Coffee Table Press
Ooh! I just got a copy of 'Princess for Hire' and I haven't had a chance to read it yet, I'm happy to hear it's that good! :D
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday Alison! That's so awesome that you and your husband read together, I have yet to interest my husband in joining me in my addiction:) And I would most certainly want to be dropped into the world of Harry Potter as well, how much fun would that be?
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit the HP world! Interesting about the bookmarks... I like my magnetic ones.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Hip hop!!! Just stoping by to say hello
ReplyDeleteTena @ Crazy Book Slut
Hi, just hopping on by! I'm the same with book marks, for me it's usually train tickets or receipts (although the kindle makes them a bit redundant!)
ReplyDeleteHarry Potter! Why didn't I think of tht!? You'd think it'd be my first chioce since I LOVE Harry :) well... doesn't everyone? Hope you have a great friday!
ReplyDeleteDiana @The Lovely Getaway
ps. Super jealous that you and the hubby read together. My boyfriend probably hasn't finished a book since the davinci code.
great answer, stop and see mine.
ReplyDeleteI too use anything as a bookmark-a bill, a piece of paper. And also I too love historic books.

Apologies in advance for my answer this week as it will not immediately resonate with the book blogger population which happens to be 99.5% female.
ReplyDeleteMy choice is a book series geared towards guys which won’t enthrall the vast majority of my fellow book bloggers (who are almost entirely female) with the extensive discussion of powerful weapons and sexy milspec gear, beautiful women, eye-popping action sequences (with occasionally obscene violence), and the like.
But there IS something in my answer that just about everyone of the female persuasion can benefit from my decidedly “books for guys” post. Hop on over to http://www.howardsherman.net to find out what it is.
Happy Hop Friday!

Hi! Old follower stopping by!
ReplyDeleteOh, so would love to live in Twilight as a Cullen - preferably Alice! But at the minute I'd love to be in Vampire Academy World. A dhampir, weell, Rose!
Aw, so sweet you just read together! I love that!
Have a great weekend!
Meg @ The Book Addicted Girl
Hoppy Friday Alison,
ReplyDeleteA Cullen....really? But then you can't grow old with your hubby....
Have a great weekend!
I can't see being a book enabler as a bad thing. I got my sister into reading, and even when she calls me to complain about how sleepy she is at work because she read all night, I'm happy that she is reading. :D
ReplyDeleteAnd I'd want to be a Mason. LOL
Great answers! Twilight didn't even occur to me! Would love to be the girl who steals Edward a way from Bella!! lol
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cafeofdreamsbookreviews.com/2011/03/book-blogger-hop-325.html
I use just about anything for bookmarks, as well.
ReplyDeleteOne question: Which Cullen? lol
Great list! Thanks for stopping by my blog!
ReplyDeleteSomer @ A Bird's Eye Review
A roo roo roo! I love The Fox and the Hound. It's one of my favorite Disney films too. I used to have a ton of Disney books that I'd listen along to. One of my favorites was Robin Hood.
ReplyDeleteI loved Matilda too, but for some reason The Witches was still my fav, I could never really get into James in the Giant Peach for some reason though.
ReplyDeleteApril @ My Shelf Confessions
I put Harry Potter as one of my places to live, too! :) Hogwarts, here I come!!
ReplyDeleteI also used to read a lot of stuff other than YA... my favorite historical time period is the 1900s - WWI ... Weird, I know. I used to always use anything for a bookmark - from toilet paper to a stick... But now I just use all the lovely swag I have! :)
Here's my hop
The Harry Potter one was incredibly obvious! I chose it too :)
ReplyDeleteNew follower :) Thanks for dropping by!
lol- I tried, but didn't manage to enable my own husband!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read Betsy-Tacy, but sounds interesting. I went to Mankato once when I was in a college bowling tournament!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm following you now, too!
GraceKrispy@MotherLode blog
Thanks for the follow! I love your site design. It's absolutely cute. :] Followed back! I too take most of my manga out from the library but I also love to buy manga. I have a growing collection, haha.
ReplyDeleteHarry Potter is such a favourite amongst most people. I haven't seen Twilight yet though. I'm almost surprised that I didn't see it all day until now!
I know what you mean about bookmarks! Lately I've been using post its. Does that count as bookmarks? And sometimes my library card. I have to stop doing that or else I might forget to retrieve it after I'm finished. :S
I used to watch The Fox and the Hound all the time as a kid. The ending made me cry every single time! Lol.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great weekend!
Great answers! I use anything for bookmarks as well. My favorite is a hotel key card I got from Disney World this summer. Actually, I think if I lost it, I would freak. I like it too much, but I use postcards and scraps of paper and stuff to mark my books.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend, Alison! :D
I loved cassette tapes as a kid! My fav was The Berenstein Bears and the Spooky Old Tree.
ReplyDeleteI have a stash of bookmarks on my bedside table, but since I read most everywhere anymore I use packing receipts, mail, pages from syllabuses (or is it syllabai?).
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it just drive you freaking nuts when your husband goes on a cleaning rampage?
Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for visiting my blog. I don't think I've ever seen anyone have 56 comments on one post. I feel lucky if I get ten. Jealous! I like to read cookbooks, too.
ReplyDeleteYes, the internet is a huge distraction. When I have nice bookmarks that are flatter than what you buy at the store I'll use them, otherwise I'll use scraps of paper or receipts, or the magazine subscription inserts.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend! :)
Hi Alison! Hopping through! Thanks for being such an awesome supporter of my blog! I can't tell you how much it means to me! Your blog is one of the few that I make a point to check out almost daily!
ReplyDeleteLove the facts, especially about your husband. I think it's so sweet you two read together!
Have a good weekend!
XO!
Stopping by to say hi. I use almost anything as a bookmark, too. Whatever is around and can hold my place.
ReplyDeleteThat's What Liz Read
Returning the hop! Thanks for following me...I am now a follower too! Austen prose is Austen inspired. I have read those but not actual Austen novels.
ReplyDeleteHave a fantastic weekend!
I also use anything for a receipt! I've been a follower for awhile now! Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteHahah! Great answers for the Follow Friday :) I, too, use just about anything I can find as a bookmark. Usually end up using the library check out print. I don't know why it's like that, I have tons of cute and lovely bookmarks, but when I actually need one, I just can't seem to find it >_<
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Thats great that you got your husband back into reading!
ReplyDeleteHey! Thanks for stopping by my blog! Old follower here. Happy Friday :)

Thanks for coming by my blog, and now you have a new follower. I used to use some old theatre tickets as bookmarks, but then someone sent me a pile of Bookmooch bookmarks and I shifted to just using those.

Being a Cullen would be a dream, wouldn't it? I don't know if I'd spend all my time protecting Bella though...:P
ReplyDeleteHAHA. i use anything but bookmarks too! I usually just rip a piece of a paper out and use that.
ReplyDeleteThrilled to find you in my comments section!! Hello. Oh I do so love this beautiful blog. And haven't you done so well in nine tiny months? What's your secret - (I insist you write it down and pass it under the proverbial table - wink wink ;)?
ReplyDeleteAhhhhh - Anyway. Here because you lead me by the nose - ;) I buy recipe books (Jaimie Oliver and Rick Stein are fabulous) but like you say - rarely bother with a full on recipe cook night. I flick mostly to get ideas and to adore the pictures. Rick Steins is a Conish appreciation of fish. I'm half Cornish and love the area - and fish! It's a win win! ;)

I love the blog... Thank you for stopping by the blog. I am a frequent bookmark loser and will use just about anything (except folding the corner of the book page) as a bookmark!
ReplyDeletehappy reading
Thank you for stopping by my blog, I do use bookmarks it's my other little obsession to find cute bookmarks haha
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend
Hi! Thanks for the follow - I'm now following you, too. Cute site! I rarely use proper bookmarks, either - my most common pagemarker these days is a train or bus ticket!
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeletethnx for stopping by my blog!
You asked me how I would describe historic fantasy.
Well think of books like, the parasol protectorate book by Gail carriger, the Gemma Doyl series by Libba Bray ;)
Have a great weekend

Thanks for stopping by, returning the favour ;) I'm an enabler too, I'm always lending my books to my friends!! I think it's great to encourage others to read more. I'm glad I'm not the only book-stacker around, enjoy your weekend!!

Hi Alison,
ReplyDeleteI love your answer for the "series" question. I'll have to check out the Betsy-Tacy books. This is the first I've heard of them.
I'm a new follower.

I think we are kindred spirits! I also use money and receipts (mostly receipts) for bookmarks! I buy real bookmarks all the time, because they are cute or there's a great quote on it or something, but I can never find them when I need them. It's like the one sock that goes missing from the laundry or something! LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by my blog. I love yours...the cherry blossoms are great!
Hey again , Alison....I am working Aidan's Darcy Trilogy is coming up for me soon :-) And as for Georgette Heyer....nope, never read her work, BUT I just looked her up, and I MUST read her work now! LoL! Thanks!

Hi Alison! We do have a lot in common! My hubby is doing family medicine and pyschiatry. He's a busy guy! He's also doing a fellowship in forensics.
ReplyDeleteHi, Alison. Hopping back through, I'm kinda like you I used to have a ton of those books with cassettes when I was a kid where the tape would tell you the story and you'd follow along with the book. I wish I still had them now, I'd share them with my niece. :)
ReplyDeleteI use random objects for bookmarks too! Sometimes receipts, candy wrappers, homework; you name it and odds are it has held a place in a book for me!
ReplyDelete-Katelyn
I love the Betsy~Tacy books so much! I try to reread them every year. I definitely wish I had Betsy's high school experience. It just sounds so perfect to me!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could get my boyfriend to read. He'll pick up a book every now and then, but for the most part it's not his thing. I did get him to read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which he really liked. He also read my Beedle the Bard book before I did. I guess I just have to find the right things.
ReplyDeleteHi Alison. Old follower hopping by.
ReplyDeleteDitto for using the receipt as a bookmark. I tend to keep the receipts in the book when I purchase them - it's kind of an OCD habit. So, when I read any book I usually have a built in bookmark.
I think it's awesome that your husband reads with you..
Have a great weekend!
Amy
I love cookbooks, too! And YA, of course. I prefer to use actual bookmarks for bookmarks, though. I have a huge collection of them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping by! Great to see you. Have an awesome weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny! I am in the process of trying to get my bf to read White Cat right now too! I think I've almost got him reeled in!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by! Good to hear from you! Happy Hop!

ReplyDeleteAwesome, I also loved to listen to picture books with cassette tapes! LoL, that must really date us ^_~ Dare I say that I listened my brother's with accompanying RECORD! *gasp*
Thanks for stopping by :]
ReplyDeleteI always use the library receipt too lol. And my mom has loads of cookbooks but I'm like you--I like going through them but I don't think I'd attempt anything :P
I loved books with the cassette tapes when I was little!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and I think everyone has said Harry Potter for their book to be in!

Thanks for visiting! My boyfriend's aunt loves reading cookbooks too, even though she hardly ever makes the stuff in them. And I totally get what you mean with using stuff as bookmarks, I use the receipts from the library all the time :P.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. I think it is too funny that you occasionally use money as bookmarks - wouldn't that be a great surprise to find a $10 bill in a book that you re-read? But not so great if you swap or sell it, lol.
ReplyDeleteI majored in history, but my concentrations were in the American Civil War & Reconstruction time periods and U.S. Urban history. I LOVE HISTORY! But I guess I'm not the only nerd out there, haha.
And I would love to be a Cullen!
Have a great weekend!
Mandy @ Embrace Your Oddities
And
I have so many cookbooks & I don't really cook..lol I love to look through and dream.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same with bookmarks - the thing I use most frequently are those subscription cards that fall out of magazines. There always seems to be one around.
Picture books with cassette tapes are the best!Thank you so much for stopping by! have an awesome weekend!
ReplyDeleteJust dropping by for the blog hop. You have a beautiful blog. I love the design.
ReplyDeleteMy answer: I would love to be in Francine River's Redeeming Love. I wouldn't want to be the main character. Just a secondary character is gets to watch it all happen.

Hi! I never use bookmarks ever. Ive bought them cause they are pretty but never use them. I never have been able to use them. My friend think its weird that I know where I was just by opening the book.
ReplyDeleteI was a history major, I love western Civ especially Greek and Roman. I love learning about that stuff but have never read a book because I cant find one that doesn't read like a textbook. I heard James Patterson King Tut was written like fiction but I haven't sat down and tried it yet.
I love your answers! I noticed that Harry Potter is a popular one!

ReplyDeleteThanks for hopping by my blog! Oh, not a lot of people like Grisham. =)
Have a great weekend!
I like reading cookbooks too even though I'm a horrible cook.
ReplyDeleteI also really like "reading" cookbooks, but I don't relly know why. It's the same with those magazines that show you have to furnish your house. I lvoe looking at them, but I'll never use any of it!! XD
