I'm bumping Going Vintage up my list. I love an author like her who writes about family and sweet characters and nice lessons. While it definitely does seem like the MC here is harping on the wrong problem (technology), I'm looking forward to seeing her attempts at adjusting to 1960s technology. It sounds like it will be fun :)

And, my mom was born in 1946. I don't know what makes me feel older, that or hearing a book set in 1986 referred to as "historical fiction" *groan* Small Reviewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16072352095510905410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1798065526948874468.post-79999845906896235092013-07-05T08:52:56.905-05:002013-07-05T08:52:56.905-05:00Love that family plays a big role in the book. I can't imagine living without technology (unless I lived in a library with a zillion books and my dogs and had my food delivered by magical fairies. Then I'd be able to do it because I'd never leave. I'd become a hermit. But that's another story.).Mary @ BookSwarmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04099395167194720599noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1798065526948874468.post-50021070609247061082013-07-04T07:53:18.880-05:002013-07-04T07:53:18.880-05:00Before this review I was ready to give up contempo...Before this review I was ready to give up contemporary YA for good. I prefer books that take place in other worlds (fantasy, dystopian, sci-fi, historical...) and stories set in modern day are usually depressing or silly. I recently looked through a contemporary series I used to love and I just couldn't find what made is so addicting. I can appreciate a well written contemporary but I just don't enjoy them like I do a good fantasy. But I think I want to try this book out. The idea of a teenager TRYING to live without technology is pretty funny and I like that her family is such a big part of the story.
So, I guess I'll go add this to my to-read list.Christinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03390461370772613384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1798065526948874468.post-60197245086138555582013-07-04T07:45:39.510-05:002013-07-04T07:45:39.510-05:00Hol cow, Mallory's grandmother was born in 194...Hol cow, Mallory's grandmother was born in 1946? Then she is also a year younger than my mom. Now I feel old. My grandmother was born in 1921!!

Anyway, I had the same frustrations with Mallory. I just couldn't quite understand why Mallory was so sure life in the early 1960s was easier. I mean, even as a high schooler, I never thought that. But I did enjoy this one.

Great review!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1798065526948874468.post-18418947857303248332013-07-04T04:56:49.359-05:002013-07-04T04:56:49.359-05:00I've seen this book around and had no idea wha...I've seen this book around and had no idea what it was about, it sounds interesting.

Apparently there is an actual teen who did something like this recently and Penguin is publishing her experiences as a memoir called Popular: Vintage Wisdom for the Modern Geek .
