I read it over and over as a mid...I LOVE this book. I read it over and over as a middle schooler, and I, too, took the ending at face value. Jonas' society is really well realized for such a short book, and the transfer of memory scenes are so well done! We teach it in 6th grade at our ...I LOVE the Giver. We teach it in 6th grade at our school and, when the kids come to me in 8th grade, they still pull out references to it. It's fantastic and should be required reading for middle school--so many thought-provoking discussions come out of it!
